Description
Ana Tijoux and Lila Downs are folk heroines of their own countries. Tijoux is a politically-conscious wordsmith who cut her teeth in the group Makiza, before her own solo career found her taking on the patriarchy, the Pinochet dictatorship and current day Chilean politics using the language of rap... but also pop and folk. Lila Downs – raised in Oaxaca, Mexico – has also spent her career as a singer-songwriter grappling with issues of native identity, inequality and feminism in Mexico and beyond. Mutual fans of one another, the pair team up on the _Roja y Negro_ EP and join us on *Peak Time* to talk about their unique connection, the influence of Violeta Parra and Mercedes Sosa, their current tour and the ongoing struggle to give voice to the triumphs and struggles of their people. We're also joined by Ytasha L.
