South African gqom and kwaito, Ghanaian banks, Egyptian electro chaabi, Liberian hipco, Angolan kuduros, Ugandan acholi — these are just a few of the exciting styles of music coming out of Africa, not to mention the vast array of tribal-specific styles in existence. Today we’ll hear from a selection of artists representing the rich and vibrant diversity of Africa. From South Africa we listen to art-pop artist Nakhane on exploring gender identity through electronic pop, soulful R&B and choral and gospel movements; Durban producer DJ Lag on the dark and hypnotic house variant called gqom; Johannesburg rapper Yugen Blarkok on her beguiling mix of sci-fi sounds and meditative melodies; and journalist Helen Herimbi briefs us on the history of kwaito, a slower-than-usual style of house music. Heading westward, we’ll hear from Nigerian-born Mr.
