Today we listen back to a conversation between Peak Time correspondent Harley Brown and Abiodun Oyewole of spoken-word legends the Last Poets. Officially formed in 1968 on May 19, the birthday of Malcom X, this collective of poets and musicians gained notoriety for addressing the political upheaval of the time and raising awareness of the African-American experience — they are widely regarded as the forefathers of hip-hop. Earlier this year, on the 50th anniversary of the band's inception, the Last Poets released their first album in 20 years, _Understand What Black Is_. Still as politically charged as ever, the commentary is as relevant now as it ever was, speaking to the struggles of race and identity today.
