Description
The Master Musicians of Jajouka propelled into international ears via the enthusiasm of Paul Bowles, Brion Gysin and fellow beat poets seeking mystic thrills in Morocco. Their reputation as otherworldly entrancers was solidified through Brian Jones’ 1968 recordings in their village that resulted in an album arguably more innately psychedelic than his Rolling Stones ever laid to tape. This attention was but a mere blip in the Master Musicians of Jajouka’s history though. Their intense pipes, thundering drums and mesmerizing strings have been echoing off the Riff Mountains long before the hippies rolled through. William Burroughs famously called them "a 4000 year old rock & roll band," and this isn’t far from the truth. On this episode – ahead of the ensemble's forthcoming performance at the Red Bull Music Festival New York – we hear about the group’s magic-laced heritage from their leader Bachir Attar, who follows in the footsteps of his father, father’s father and so on.
