Henri Debs was devoted to sharing the music of Guadeloupe. A musician and businessman of Lebanese heritage, Debs was fully French-Caribbean in sound and spirit. He launched his grassroots label with music from recording sessions in the back of his clothing store, many of which he played on. From those humble beginnings, Disques Debs International expanded, and for over 50 years released hundreds of records. The biguine, bolero, zouk, reggae and more pressed up by Debs were influenced by an energetic Caribbean exchange via radio broadcasts and touring bands. A champion of the Créole language and culture, Debs was open to the the universe but dedicated to projecting his unique perspective back into the mix. Strut Records has launched the first ever survey of Disques Debs International co-produced by Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) and Emile Omar (Radio Nova).
