Sonja Moonear hails from Switzerland, and despite her childhood training in classical piano, she eventually found herself drawn to the pulsing rhythms of electronic music and wound up immersed in Geneva’s blossoming club scene during the early 2000s. After her early DJ sets led to a connection with the Perlon crew, she found a foothold in the minimal sphere and also began to play in Berlin and beyond, while also venturing into the production realm with Martin Schopf under their joint Junction SM project. In 2010, however, Moonear made her solo debut via her own Ruta 5 label, and she’s managed to continue rising through the ranks, largely on the strength of her DJ sets, which can still be classified as minimal—at least some of the time.
