Description
With a steadfast work ethic and extensive vinyl library, Brooklyn hip-hop DJ and producer DJ Spinna’s willingness to pursue his roots (funk, soul and jazz), foundation (hip-hop) and future (electronic dance music) has set him apart. A cornerstone of hip-hop’s late ’90s indie-uprise with his group Jigmastas and label Beyond Real, he provided the canvas for some of the era’s lyrical giants, including Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch. Collaborations with Brand Nubian’s Sadat X and Grand Puba, Masta Ace and Guru followed, as well as an impressive string of remixes, including works for Mary J Blige, Michael Jackson, De La Soul, Platinum Pied Pipers, Les Nubians and Zero 7, to name a few. The remix that catapulted Spinna into the dance music scene was his version of Shawn Escoffery’s “Days Like This.” He released his landmark solo album on BBE Records in 2004, the cosmic funk, ’80s synth-driven *Intergalactic Soul* album in 2006, and founded his imprint Wonder Wax.
