Phat Kat's career has long been intertwined with that of the late J Dilla – the former's rhymes and the latter's beats formed the yin and yang of numerous Detroit rap records in the late '90s and early 2000s, including their group 1st Down to appearances on Slum Village albums and Dilla's _Welcome 2 Detroit_ album. In 2007, Phat Kat dropped his classic _Carte Blanche_, which was reissued in 2018, and he's kept busy in Detroit's tight-knit hip-hop community ever since. He joins Nick Speed – another of the scene's movers and shakers – in our Detroit studio to celebrate his sound and dig into what inspires him.
