Description
At house parties in his native Belfast, video game-playing metalhead Jack Hamill first heard IDM – that somewhat contentious term for “intelligence dance music” that described a school of experimental sounds born of early 90s UK rave culture, pioneered by the likes of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, and developed through labels like Warp, Skam and Planet Mu. Both confused by and in awe of this strange sound, Jack Hamill drew on his seemingly disparate loves of video games, film soundtracks, ambient music, ’80s funk, ’90s hip-hop and IDM and started making music as Space Dimension Controller. With several EPs and albums under his belt on legendary rave label R&S, Clone sub-label Royal Oak, as well as on Ninja Tune – Space Dimension Controller’s productions twist his child-like dreams of space age operas and alternate universes into playful synthetic melodies.
