At house parties in his native Belfast, video game-playing metalhead Jack Hamill first heard IDM – that somewhat contentious term for “intelligence dance music” that described a school of experimental sounds born of early ’90s UK rave culture, pioneered by the likes of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, and developed through labels like Warp, Skam and Planet Mu. Both confused by and in awe of this strange sound, Jack Hamill drew on his seemingly disparate loves of video games, film soundtracks, ambient music, ’80s funk, ’90s hip-hop and IDM and started making music as Space Dimension Controller.
