Description
“Sometimes it’s difficult to describe myself as just a musician,” says Nadah el Shazly. With a background in psychology, theatre and visual arts, it comes as no surprise that her music bursts with different influences, colors and modes of expression. Based in Cairo, Egypt, the singer, composer and producer has found a second musical home in Montréal, where she recorded most of her debut album with Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi of the Dwarfs of East Agouza, with a cast of 22 musicians. The record, _Ahwar_, is a swirling collage of classical Arabic music, electronics, drum machines and free jazz, all thrown together with the punk attitude straight from her time as the singer of a Misfits cover band. Created over the course of two years, _Ahwar_ is a bold, multilayered statement from an artist who masterfully builds bridges between musical worlds.
