Description
Karl Lagerfeld calls him a “sound stylist,” but Michel Gaubert prefers to think of himself as a “sound illustrator.” Nomenclature aside, this French selector has been a prominent figure in the fashion world for decades, soundtracking shows for top-line designers like Balenciaga, Raf Simons, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Roberto Cavalli, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Fürstenberg and others too numerous to list. Arriving in Paris in 1978, he found himself thrust into the city’s fabulously hedonistic nightlife, playing music at the Palace and working as a buyer at Champs Disques, an independent record shop frequented by Lagerfeld. With trips to London, Belgium and the US in search of records, Gaubert assembled a massive collection of music, and once the ’90s rolled around, he was asked to put together the soundtrack for one of Lagerfeld’s fashion shows.
