Born in Louisiana, Julianna Barwick spent much of her childhood in the rural South, where a sizable portion of her youth was spent singing in the church choir. Now based in Brooklyn, the music she makes certainly isn’t religious, but there is something particularly spacious and almost otherworldly about it. Barwick’s creations are essentially rooted in her own voice, and her early work often involved looping short refrains into lush, swirling masses, flanked by piano and sparse percussion. Walking the line between experimental, ambient and folk while often working in solitude, her self-released debut LP, _Sanguine_, appeared in 2006. However, it was 2011’s *Magic Place*, via the Asthmatic Kitty label, that put Barwick’s talents on a wider stage.
