Born in 1989 in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, Gabriel Garzón-Montano became wrapped up in music from an early age thanks to his French-born mother, a singer and member of the Philip Glass ensemble in the ’90s, who encouraged him to study music formally. Pop melodies, hip-hop drum-patterns and R&B lyricism fizzing and melding together in his sponge of a mind, leading him to play many instruments in his youth but eventually focusing on keyboards and bass. In 2014, Drake sampled the opening track of Garzón-Montano’s *Bishouné: Alma del Huila* EP, “6, 8,” for his 2015 mixtape *If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late*, and the spotlight that he was suddenly thrust into led to a flurry of confident creativity.
