Born and raised in the Texan city of Corpus Christi, El Dusty is a DJ and producer of cumbia music who describes his sound as a translation of the Southern Texas border experience through “new barrio” anthems. Coming from a crate-digging tradition that links Latin classics with bass-heavy soundsystem and hip-hop culture, he grew up in a home soundtracked by Tejano anthems, Chicano soul music, classic rock and ’70s Latin soul. Starting out on radio at 16 as a self-taught turntablist, he used these DJ techniques in the studio for his original tracks, taking cut samples from his collection of old-school Latin vinyl with an MPC2000 sampler. In recent years he’s collaborated with a new wave of Latin artists like Ana Bárbara, Toy Selectah and Erick Rincón of 3BallMTY, among others, and is part of the Peligrosa All Star DJs Collective, an Austin-based crew of DJs, producers and visual artists.
