We’ve told a lot of Detroit stories here on First Floor – the city is the birthplace of techno, after all – but we’ve never spoken to anyone quite like FIT Siegel. Growing up as a skater and eventually building his own bike-messenger business, he gradually found his way into the Motor City’s house and techno scene, making friends with the likes of Mike Banks and Omar-S along the way. Aside from his work as a DJ and producer, he’s also the man behind the FIT Sound and Est. 83’ labels, not to mention the long-running FIT Distribution, which has spent the past decade getting many of your favorite labels’ records into shops around the globe. Here, Siegel speaks about his place in Detroit’s electronic music ecosystem, his new collaborative EP with Kassem Mosse and his decision to bring FIT Distribution to a close.
