Born and raised in the US state of Georgia, Ernest Greene AKA Washed Out started to produce instrumental hip-hop that drew on his tastes in grunge music – slow swathes of stripped back beats, washing drones with air and light in them. After close friend Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi started to champion his music in the halcyon days of MySpace, he became know in the overlapping indie rock and downbeat hip-hop scenes for a style of production that would soon be coined “chillwave”: a bleached-out style of ambient beat-making with romantic overtones. Washed Out has released four albums to date – most notably his 2011 sophomore album, *Within and Without* on legacy indie label Sub Pop, and his 2017 album, *Mister Mellow*, on soulful hip-hop imprint Stones Throw.
