Description
As a record producer, mixer and engineer, Sylvia Massy has left her mark on more than 30 years of music. Having started out in the San Francisco punk scene, she moved to Los Angeles in the late ’80s and pursued her career at Larrabee Sound, where she recorded the debut of metal icons Tool. While at Larrabee she befriended Rick Rubin, with whom she collaborated on a string of albums after moving to Sound City’s Studio B — she created her signature sound there, with special equipment and a vintage Neve 8038 console. Massy built her own studio, RadioStar, in Weed, California, before moving to Ashland, Oregon, where she continues to work to this day. Massy has produced and engineered music for System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Melvins, among myriad others.
