Nadine Shah, a child of Pakistani and Norwegian parents, grew up in a coastal town in the northeast of England. She navigated her youthful curiosities about identity through music — though she felt somewhat left out from the largely white and male indie rock scene around her native Sunderland, she found herself drawn to jazz and more introspective styles of songwriting, which influenced the tender power of her singing voice.
