After meeting at university in London in 2008, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker formed Mount Kimbie at a time when the hype surrounding dubstep had already faded. Taking cues from the capital’s abundant electronic music scene, but seizing the opportunity to find their own angle, Mount Kimbie quickly made waves, attracting the attention of seminal dubstep label Hotflush Recordings before finding wider acclaim. While their initial EPs and debut LP focused on instrumentals that added a new, distinctive layer to London’s club sounds, on the critically acclaimed sophomore album *Cold Spring Fault Less Youth* for Warp and their latest, *Love What Survives*, the duo have started to use vocals as songwriting tools, employing both their own voices and those of prominent collaborators such as James Blake, King Krule’s Archy Marshall and Mica Levy (AKA Micachu). Where the earlier works felt gloomy and melancholic, Mount Kimbie’s music has become lighter and more upbeat over time.
