Raised in Washington, D.C., Meshell Ndegeocello is a Grammy-nominated musician and vocalist who started out playing bass in go-go bands like Prophecy and Rare Essence in the late ’80s. Since her 1993 debut, _Plantation Lullabies_, on Madonna’s Maverick Records, she’s released 11 albums that have fused R&B, rap, soul, funk, jazz, blues and reggae, and collaborated with artists as diverse as the Rolling Stones, Bill Withers, Robert Glasper, Chaka Khan and Alanis Morissette, to name but a few. In 2018 she released _Ventriloquism_, an album of reworkings of tracks from the mid-’80s to mid-’90s, featuring covers of songs by Sade, Janet Jackson, Prince and more. A prominent social justice activist, Ndegeocello has also recorded music and written essays on issues such as women’s empowerment and bullying.
