There are 25 years between Low’s slowcore classic _I Could Live in Hope_ and the band’s sober assumption that “This is not the end, just the end of hope.” (The latter being a particularly powerful moment on their acclaimed 2018 effort _Double Negative_, summing up the seismic shifts of looming authoritarianism.) Over the course of this quarter century, Low has been a rare example of a band that constantly refines its abilities and sonic palette, reimagining its sound in the process. In this episode of Fireside Chat, Low’s husband-and-wife duo Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk discuss what they learned from dub reggae and grind metal, the perks and perils of living on the edge of civilization and the longevity granted by a mutual trust between musicians and their core fans.
