Lesley Flanigan came to be one of electronic music’s most idiosyncratic forces by accident. The composer and vocalist, who hails from Tampa, Florida, had performed in local bands, and originally studied sculpture. The desire to engage with art in a more hands-on way led her to study at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications program. One day, while in a physical computing class, a sudden mishap with an audio circuit, a speaker and a Piezo microphone turned into feedback... and a revelatory moment. Since then, the New York-based musician has been probing the vast possibilities held within sound — particularly with its physicality — through forging, and performing, with unique speaker feedback instruments. Especially on albums such as _Amplifications_ and _Hedera_, she wrestles with the interplay of feedback, vocals and the joyous noise they make. In turn, Flanigan challenges listeners to engage with sound in a way that goes far beyond listening.
