Kyoka is a Japanese electronic musician who works primarily with tape recordings, drawing on ambient, drone, industrial techno and noise to conduct her largely improvisational experiments. After moving to Tokyo for her studies, she bought a Roland MC 505 — a drum machine, sequencer and MIDI controller — which led to a quartet of releases between 2008 and 2010 for the German onpa))))) label. These recordings piqued the interest of Raster-Noton, whose thematic cornerstones of rhythmic minimalism and radical composition suited Kyoka’s burgeoning style; Raster-Noton released her 2012 EP, _ISH_, and her 2014 album, _Is Superpowered_. Kyoka’s work often brings in elements of pop, industrial and new wave, all smothered in unpredictable waves of noise.
