Description
When she was eight years old, Gangsta Boo would call into local radio shows to rap about non-violence. Six years later, after repeated voicemails on Lord Infamous’ answering machine, she joined the Backyard Posse, a precursor to Three 6 Mafia. Being the youngest and only female member of “The Triple Six” didn’t faze her. With her Memphis lilt and penchant for lurid lyrics, Boo was a captivating presence in the group, providing a feminine – but not token! – counterpoint to her male bandmates. And, behind the scenes, she ghostwrote for Crunchy Black and DJ Paul. Since leaving the group in 2001, Boo has consistently released albums and mixtapes, and, in recent years, has become a (comparatively) elder stateswoman for Memphis rap. After 20-plus years in music, her discography is full of notable collaborations – OutKast, Gucci Mane, 8Ball & MJG, E-40, and Run the Jewels, to name but a few – but, at 38, she’s not done yet.
