Ed Michel is an American musician and record producer whose work has largely focused on jazz and blues. Raised and based in Los Angeles, he came up through the intersections of the burgeoning folk scene and radical political movements of the '50s and '60s, inspired by both the messages and music in equal parts. After working at various recording studios as an engineer and producer, he came into his own after working with Impulse! and Bluesway Records. As a writer, producer, engineer and performer, he made connections with giants like Duke Ellington, Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and many others. Long after many of these artists have passed, Michel has devoted much of his working life to re-presenting old recordings to new audiences, most recently with the work of Archie Shepp, Ahmad Jamal and Rob Kunkel. With his breadth of knowledge and cosmic outlook, Michel is a goldmine of stories about jazz, blues and folk's most vital figures.
