David Grubbs is a musician who’s grown in myriad directions over the years. Starting out in hardcore and punk bands like Squirrel Bait and Bastro in Louisville, Kentucky, he got a taste for the avant-garde through his band Gastr del Sol and a long series of collaborative recording session work – playing guitar, piano, and harmonium for minimalist greats like Tony Conrad and Pauline Oliveros, and indie experimentalists Matmos. It’s when he struck out on his own, though, after the break up of Gastr del Sol in 1997, that Grubbs really found his stride – writing and releasing solo albums, largely on the acclaimed Drag City label, running his own Blue Chopsticks and Drag City sub-label Dexter’s Cigar, and collaborating on multimedia projects with filmmakers, writers and other composers.
