There’s a huge swath of history packed into Peckings Records’ cozy storefront on Askew Road in West London’s Shepherd's Bush neighborhood. Founded in 1974 by Kingston, JA music scene figure George “Peckings” Price, the shop is synonymous with the spread of Jamaican music throughout the UK. For many years, Peckings was the exclusive distributor of close family friend Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One recordings, making it a prime go-to spot not only for the city’s sound system selectors and expat Caribbean community, but reggae and ska-obsessed listeners of all stripes. Peckings’ patriarch has since passed. But the family business continues on in the good hands of son Chris and his siblings, who also oversee operation of the Peckings Records label, which has been releasing essential tunes since the early ’00s.
