Music created in the past does not by any means necessarily live in the past. This as evidenced by the plethora of essential vintage sounds now regularly being made available to the world via reissues. Projects like _The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda_ or Music From Memory’s _Outro Tempo_ compilation may have (deservedly) garnered most of the attention this past year. But 2017 was otherwise overall yet another strong year for reissues, with many less celebrated releases, many of them also vinyl only, worth seeking out. On the latest episode of Across 135th Street, host Chairman Jefferson Mao handpicks some of his favorite reissued tunes of 2017 of this ilk: psych garage soul, private press spiritual jazz, Malian afro-funk, Dutch bedroom synth-pop, island disco and a batch of previously unreleased modern soul and boogie gems. Let the re-discovery process commence.
