In a city traditionally dominated by musicians, New Orleans’s DJ Soul Sister has been holding it down for NOLA selectors for close to two decades, beginning for her as a kid when she’d astutely hit up her friends’ parents for their records. And it continues through today with her Soul Power radio show on WWOZ and Hustle Saturdays soiree – both long-running weekly showcases for her keen familiarity with the sounds that make the party people move. Hustle’s slogan is: “Another right on party situation, and a soulful takeover, because a behind is a terrible thing to waste.” Discerning fans of her work – from Crescent City transplant Solange to P-Funk overlord George Clinton (whose 71st birthday party Soul Sister DJ'd) – would certainly concur. Taking a break from a NYC vinyl shopping excursion, Soul Sister stops by Chairman Mao’s Across 135th Street program to chat and share a few favorites – from classic Mardi Gras Indian funk to D.C. go-go and lost Motown album track gems.
