Description
Ziad Rahbani, musician, composer, playwright, actor, satirist, culture critic, and cultural icon of Lebanon has passed at the age of 69. His stylistically diverse music and skewed lyrics took the career of Fairuz, his mother, in a fertile new direction, and his musical plays offered a wildly imagined yet mordant, strikingly vernacular, and musically vibrant view of Lebanon's cultural insanity. Politically he was a leftist, but Lebanese of all political stripes were drawn to his plays and their songs.
Nine of his songs here, sung mostly by himself, Fairuz, and Joseph Sakr, who was frequently featured in his plays. Thanks to my wife Mona for a window into his often untranslatable lyrics and into his cultural significance. And thanks to my brother-in-law's brother-in-law, Kamal, for sharing Joseph Sakr's Ziad songs some years back. (playlist in Comments)
