Ochun (Oshun, Oxum) is one of the orishas or forms of the deity in the Yoruba religion which came to the Americas with slavery and exists here in forms such as Santeria and Voudou. She is honored in Africa and in the Americas as a goddess of fertility and the river, among many other things. When I received the new album of the Cuban Canadian duo Okan and found two tracks dedicated to her, I thought of playing a number of other songs to or about her that I or the station had. When I decided to make a mix and searched for other such mixes on Mixcloud, I was amazed at the number already there and also the number of Mixcloud creators who had taken or incorporated her name.
