Celso Piña passed on Aug. 21. Born in Monterrey, Mexico and self-taught on the accordeon, he was inspired by greats like Alfredo Guttierez and Aníbal Velasquez to launch a long musical career playing Colombian cumbia. We hear him here with and without his group Ronda Bogotá, in older cumbias and more recent ones with other influences, and in collaborations with Café Tacuba and Kumbia Boruka. And we hear from Gutierez and Velasquez and a cumbia from Ozomatli that he later covered. And we hear his contribution to a tribute to his Mexican countryman José Alfredo Jiménez. But not in that order. Cumbia!
