Valentines Day is awful, but society treats people who speak out against it with contempt, as if they are loveless, black-hearted creatures, so the whole thing becomes quite awkward for those who don't like it. It makes a mockery out of something that is parading as a decent endeavour, and in some bizarre subconscious fashion almost empowers people to be ambivalent for the rest of the year. It's no longer a day to celebrate love EVEN MORE than usual, but a compromise to suggest that you can be less loving most of the time, and put in a bit of effort for one whole day. It's a pretty sorry celebration, and that's just tragic.
