RIP, Totó: A Cumbia House Tribute - Mixtape 178 (260522)

I saw the news that Totó la Momposina, the Queen of Cumbia, had died this week.

She first came to my attention via the Copyright mix of “La Mezcla” by Michel Cleis, a G. family favourite, and was the catalyst for my love of Latin house. I later read a feature on her in Songlines and came to appreciate what a remarkable woman she was and the remarkable life she lived.

I try not to repeat tracks I’ve played before, but I’m making an exception this time. We start with the version of “La Mezcla” that has given me and my family so much joy, and end with the more organic full length original by Cleis. In between are a few more Latin house tracks that feature her voice, alongside other cuts with a cumbia flavour.
