At my first job in London, late-90s. The boss took the team out for a very liquid dinner in Soho. We end up at Ronnie Scott's.
Roy Ayers was playing that night. 'Hey, I know who he is! Let's check it out...' I recall saying in my very drunken state. My boss at the time knew the guys at the door so they let us in.
I am heading out of the loo at one point and run into a couple of older American guys chatting and immediately say 'Hi'. They asked what I was doing there. I said I was there to see Roy Ayers. 'Oh yeah? Who's he?' one of them asks.
I slurred about him being a legend of a monster vibes player. After a small chat about where we were all from, we amicably parted ways in anticipation of the coming set.
The emcee came out, introduced Roy Ayers. At that, the chap I spoke to earlier comes running out, slaps me on the back amiably, points at me in recognition and laughs. He continues running up to the stage and starts performing.
