As we approach the Solstice, folk music reminds me of the links to a distant, pagan past where many of our Christmas traditions were born...the shorter days remind us of the cycle of the seasons and how we will come through this one to enjoy the rebirth of the year. And although the lyrics may be Christian, the soul is at least half-pagan.
Our Boxing Day tradition is to go to a particular pub to watch the local Morris side perform a mummer's play, which culminates in a rousing singalong to the first song on this mix, which is apt as we live in Sussex. (If you have no idea what I just said, Google is your friend!)
We also try to get to a wassail early in the new year if we can, which happens less than we'd like it to.
I'll be taking the next two weeks off of work, but will still post mixes. Will probably not be able to listen as much, but I will be popping in.
If this is your last day, Have a great holiday! I hope your celebrations are as sufficiently pagan as you see fit.
