When I was pulling this mix together I had just found out Sonny Rollins had passed away.
When I was a teenager, I had a subscription to the Columbia House Jazz Club...one classic album sent every month. One of those albums was Saxophone Colossus by Rollins, which I listened to repeatedly. We open with Moritat (aka Mack the Knife) from that record. We close with a performance of one of my favourite standards, where he's joined by Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Stitt.
In between, we travel through soul-jazz, jazz-funk, latin jazz, and acid jazz, celebrating the lineage Rollins helped shape.
By the way, Happy 250th to the USA. Hope my US listeners have a great celebration.
