I had the privilege of living a part of my childhood in Puerto Rico. It had a profound effect on my musical tastes. For instance, I first heard rap music, mixed in with disco and salsa beats in the background, on the local station Salsoul 98 (pronounced noven-tai-ocho).
And when I was older, I always felt a bit of a preference for Puerto Rican-style salsa sounds, including bomba and plena, compared to their Cuban cousins.
The following is an homage to Puerto Rican (and Nuyorican) music and musicians cobbled together from my collection of dodgily ripped mp3s and compilation albums.
You may notice one non-Puerto Rican group on here, but the song mentions Puerto Rico, so it gets included. Alongside a couple of pop surprises.
