There is a lot about the 80s I’d happily edit out: my mullet, a million awkward teenage moments, and maybe a few skipped classes and my not-so-louche excesses. (But I would happily have my Camaro back!)
One thing I wouldn’t touch is the music. At a difficult time in anyone’s life, I found escape in the sheer variety and quality of what was coming out week after week.
You could argue the template for modern pop was laid down in that decade, and that everything since has been an ongoing dialogue with 80s music...or just variations on its themes.
This mix is one little snippet of that dialogue: modern edits and remixes talking back to the originals. We start with a twist on the song that symbolically opened the decade, and end with a mix of a track that prefigured how dance music would sound for years to come.
