0 dark 30...Last day of US Navy Boot Camp, San Diego, Summer 1992. On the bus that would take us to the airport, just having been made to drop and do a final set of pushups for leaving the barracks in a mess...in our dress whites...with our seabags on our backs.
The driver puts on a Jackie Wilson compilation tape, and as we are all looking around at each other in quiet disbelief at having come through...now brothers going our different ways...we all smile...and start to sing along to the first song on this mix.
It's my birthday today, a time to reflect. Rather than a total party mix, I pulled together a sampling of songs that remind me of moments and people in my life.
Both to celebrate and to remember and 'pour out a 40' for those that have been lost, either physically or figuratively, over the years.
But mainly to celebrate. Part of my story is in each of these songs.
What a long, strange trip it's been so far.
