"La Zone" or Wasteland in English is basically an area where things don't work like anywhere else.Characterized by absent Police and gangs ruling the streets. It used to be an area just outside Paris where disenfranchised and undesireables settled. In a way this still exists,except they call it by a different name now,nowadays mostly inhabited by (North) African immigrants.
