I was an avid reader of Karl May's adventure stories as a 14 year old and devoured most of them in a very short time.I was fascinated by the description of the Arab world and that perhaps influenced my decision to actually travel and live there later in life.Karl May never ventured past Dresden himself.Quite interesting little fact...
His most famous character is "Kara Ben Nemsi Effendi" a somewhat pompous fellow to tell the truth,but nevertheless he and his travel companion "Haji Halef" opened up an unknown mysterious world full of adventure and wonder for me and young people in the german speaking world in general.Specially at a time when hardly anybody had ever seen let alone met an Arab.I even learned to speak some arabic from these books which came in handy when I arrived in Morocco in 2001.
