Bestimix 245: Greg Butler's South African Township 78s

The Township South African 78s featured in this bestimix are from a goldmine find of nearly 300 MINT discs uncovered by two collectors in South Africa who found them locked up in a shipping container in a settlement in the middle of the African bush. A shop had closed down in the late 60's and all the stock had been put into storage there including these 78s. At great expense the whole collection was purchased by Greg Butler of the Shellac Collective who arranged for them to be carefully shipped to the UK.

This megamix only scratches the surface of the collection but features the likes of Miriam Makeba, Jacob and Elias Lerole, Dorothy Masuka, Albert Ralunini, Zacks Nkosi and more.

The 78s cover roughly a ten year period from about 1957 to 1967 (yes they were still making 78s in South Africa then) and amongst others features Kwelas, Mbaqangas, Sax Jives, and some stunning vocal harmony group records.
