Shaun Pauling, aka Qualls, grew up in Chicago. Immersed in the rich DJ culture of the city that gave rise to House music, Shaun gravitated towards the gritty less-heralded Hip Hop culture of the city. Hip Hop eventually led him to appreciate and fiendishly collect all genres of music, most notably obscure Soul 45s. After collecting for a couple of years he started DJing himself. In 1997, he started a 7-year residency on WNUR radio. From his experience and reputation on the radio he was invited to play at the most important monthly Funk and Soul night in the U.S. – Sheer Magic. The Sheer Magic Soul Revue took place at Danny's Tavern on the first Wednesday of every month, where 400+ soulful people would flock to hear the rawest and newest sounds dropped by the three DJ’s – Dante Carfagna, Courtland Green, and Shaun himself. Sheer Magic has been written up in notable publications like Rolling Stone, XL8er, and URB.
