The Zapatistas are a revolutionary leftist group that emerged on January 1, 1994, in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico. The EZLN and Subcommandante Marcos played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of indigenous communities and marginalized groups in the region.

Subcommandante Marcos, whose real name is Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente, is a former spokesperson and military leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Mexico.

The Zapatista movement has continued to promote its vision of autonomy, social justice, and indigenous rights in Mexico and remains an influential force in grassroots activism both nationally and internationally. While the armed conflict subsided after the 1994 uprising, the Zapatistas' ideas and struggle for autonomy have persisted and continue to inspire social movements worldwide.
