Code Switching - the ability to switch from informal to formal English depending on the circumstance. While code-switching can happen in any language, it becomes controversial when talking about the switch from African American Vernacular English to "professional" English. It's the subject of the WHRO-TV documentary Code Switching, which aired on Monday, Sept. 27. On the next Another View, we'll answer your questions about code switching, and discuss its implication within the African American culture. Our guests include our very own Lisa Godley, producer of Code Switching; Shonda Buchanan, Assistant Professor of English at Hampton University; ODU Professor of Linguistics, Dr. Janet Bing; and Dr. Rebecca Wheeler, Professor of English Language and Literacy at Christopher Newport University.
