It was never my intention to make a David Lynch tribute. In fact, my intentions were to keep up with s standard set of interesting sounds from then and now with a little bit of Lynchian inspiration sprinkled in between, but after about thirty minutes you’ll quickly notice that doesn’t last. Rather than simply adjacent influences that I was hoping for – as I hope will be recognized within these opening numbers – the set suddenly takes shape from a simple hint into an exploration of fun tributes that have popped up online and on record through the years. Around the time of the Return to Twin Peaks, a number of artists posted variations on Badalamenti’s ethereal soundtrack within their digital catalogs. Xiu Xiu were even contracted by Australia’s Gallery of Modern Art for a series of reinterpretations of the soundtrack that was later released on Record Store Day in 2016.
