Winter Light / Summer Heat #282 A Pattern Like Pine Needles

"Winter Light" is pretty established on this show as a type of folk song I play. I've done an episode every winter right around New Year's with that theme, that being stark, stripped down folkiness. But it isn't Winter anymore. It's Spring. And you know what? Spring is different than Winter even if there is still snow falling and a reason to wear a coat. There's something new in the air, even if the weather and the constant depression hasn't lifted. And these songs are a lot like Spring in Vermont. They are moving out of the drear of Winter, but they are hopeful. The songs may still be stripped down, but there are different affectations in the voices and an altogether different delivery - but only sometimes. These are lighter song, the coat is still there, but it is a lighter coat, maybe you could even get away with just wearing a sweater one day, one with a pattern like pine needles. That's what Spring brings, but we aren't too far away from Winter.
