calendar in use until 1752, today's the 4th of May, not the 15th. Beltane was Wednesday, old
reckoning. The hawthorn agrees, blooming this week as the proverb said it would. So this
hour broadcasts from inside the eleven days the state took off the country.
Between two fires: Beltane behind us, Midsummer five weeks ahead — the ripening.
Lankum's hawthorn-prickled hymn opens. Durutti Column, International Music System's
cosmic Mojave, Grouper's hush. Cinematic Orchestra, 400 Blows, The System and
Weatherall's Floatation hold the middle. Jezebell, Antena (Todd Terje remix) and Pender
Street Steppers close the bounds.
